I've recently put up and edited an entry on "Olga Maynard". In so doing, I notice deficiencies and gaps in entries regarding writing about dance. Possibly this needs separate attn, including inviting informed people to do articles on recent figures, while memory is fresh and documents accessible. In that connexion, out of the Maynard piece I'm now doing a stub on William Como, editor of Dance magazine, and would appreciate help in doing so. What I've hastily cobbled so far looks like this:
William Como (1925-1 January 1989), Editor-in-Chief of Dance magazine, 1970-1988, when it is was ‘the publication of record’ during a culturally burgeoning dance epoch.
Bill Como, born in Massachusetts, studied modern dance with Beatrice Stronstorff. Drafted into the army at age eighteen, he served in the Phillipines in WW II, returning to his hometown in 1945. Como went to NYC to attend college, and found employment as an office helper for Dance magazine. Noticed by Jean Gordon, he was quickly promoted to advertising sales manager. In May 1968 Como became editor of After Dark, a NYC entertainment magazine, which had evolved from Ballroom Dance Magazine. In late 1969, Como replaced Lydia Joel as Editor of Dance, becoming Editor in Chief. ...
This is from a web source, for info.: "The convivial Como reveled in his role, traveling in America and Europe and meeting and influencing the greats of the dance world. Como introduced a distinguished feature to Dance Magazine: a monthly portfolio that was dedicated to a prominent dancer or dance company. The first portfolio was twenty-eight pages of photographs and text about Anna Pavlova. Subsequent portfolios (which give special value to back issues of Dance Magazine) were summaries of the careers of Frederick Ashton, Ruth St. Denis, Fernando Bujones, Ivan Nagy, and others. In the 1980s Dance magazine led the field and contributed widely to choreography and dance education."
