I believe a more accurate translation would be Danish fort. --Sterio (talk) 17:40, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

The New Zealand town of DANNEVIRKE was named by the settlers after DANEWERK, a small town in northern Germany. The original Danish spelling was kept. The German town was itself named after the fortifications in the area that were built by Danes to defend themselves while the town was still theirs.
