[edit] His Poetry
I'm not familiar with his poetry and don't think myself qualified to render an opinion on his work. I'd welcome anyone who could add a discussion of Gioia's writing. PedanticallySpeaking 14:46, Sep 10, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Needing attention
I posted this on Wikipedia:Pages needing attention
-
- Dana Gioia, poet and chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. I wrote the article because I'm interested in the work of the NEA but since I don't consider myself competent to write about his poetry I wonder if someone familiar with it could. (The comment about "New Formalism" there I lifted from Poetry of the United States) Please let me know on my talk page if anyone can help. PedanticallySpeaking 17:52, Sep 11, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Almost Good article
...but I would say more work needed. I compared this article to two other articles listed as "good" articles, E. E. Cummings and Ernest Hemingway. Both use inline citations which would really help this article. Also, someone needs to go through and copy-edit this article to improve its prose. Problems I saw was that either wording needed improvement, or the sentences sounded very much like a newspaper. For example, "an organization that had become gun-shy" could use a better adjective and "Fellow poet Donald Hall said "Dana Gioia is full of shit," to cite one strong opinion. The two acclaimed poets have since reconciled their differences." sounds very much like a newspaper. There are many other people who can copy-edit much better than I can so I will leave that to the professionals.
Also, I was keeping in mind that a "good" article (as described at Wikipedia:Good articles) says, "Many articles contain excellent content but are unlikely in their current state to become featured; they may be too short, or on too broad a topic, or on too specific a topic, or on a topic about which not much is known. We should endeavour to identify good content, which may have the potential to become featured after some development." So, in the longterm future, the article will be much improved if more information about personal life, criticisms and influences (if any) of his writings are included. - Dozenist talk 00:07, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
- I'm highly concerned that the Donald Hall quote "Dana Gioia is full of shit" has no source and did not actually happen. The only sources I can find on this quote are from Wiki crawlers and student newspapers. Ag1246 14:45, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Citation for quote on marginalization poetry in Western academics
Can some one provide a citation for Gioia's words re the marginalization of poetry, and the subordination of "literary bohemia" for "academic bureaucracy"?
Aside from being an excellent quotation, it requires a reference to meet simple Wiki guidelines.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.173.224.200 (talk) 17:35, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
