Danubio Fútbol Club is a Uruguayan football (soccer) club based in Montevideo. It was founded by the Bulgarian born brothers Miguel and Juan Lazaroff on March 1, 1932 and other youths from the "Republica de Nicaragua" school in Montevideo. The name of the club refers to the Danube river in the major river in Bulgaria.

Famous players from the club are, e.g., Álvaro Recoba, Ruben Sosa, Marcelo Zalayeta, Ruben Olivera, Ruben "Polillita" Da Silva, Javier Chevanton, Fabian Carini, Richard Nuñez, Walter Gargano, Carlos Grossmuller, Ignacio Gonzalez, Edison Cavani, Christian Stuani, international mexican player Nery Castillo played in the youth teams before leaving Uruguay to continue his career in Greece as well as Diego Forlán who also played for a year in the under 19 before joining Argentine club Independiente Avellaneda.

Danubio is the current champion 2006/07 of Uruguay after defeating Peñarol 4-1 in December 2006 to claim the Apertura and also defeating again Peñarol on penalties after a 1-1 draw to claim the 2007 Clausura. Danubio won the Uruguayan title before in the years 1988 and 2004.

[edit] Kit Colours and Design

The club decided in 1932 to take Montevideo Wanderers F.C. kit and colours (black and white) as homage to the latter club being the last amateur champion of Uruguay in 1931. Later when they entered a zonal league they were said to change design due to the club Universal Ramírez using exclusively that pattern. One member suggested a right sash over the white kit inspired in River Plate of Buenos Aires, but with the sash in black. The design remains until today.Their shorts are black (although some seasons they dress in white, although it is not the traditional colour) and their socks are white. In the 2005/06 season, the club wore an unusual green jersey with a white sash as their third uniform to play against teams similar in colours (such as Miramar Misiones and Wanderers). In 2007,green was reintroduced in a match against Saprissa of Costa Rica.As of late 2007,it was resolved to discontinue to use of the green jersey, due to the repetitive defeats against Wanderers and Miramar, and considered to be a "cursed" jersey. New third colour is red.
