Dan's Mountain State Park located in Allegany County, Maryland, is 9 miles (14 km) south of Frostburg, Maryland next to the town of Lonaconing, Maryland. The park offers 481 acres (1.95 km²) of wildlife along a 16-mile (26 km) stretch of Dans Mountain, including a wide variety of wildlife, mountain streams, and scenic overlooks.
Dan's Rock Overlook is the highest scenic overlook in the park at 2,898 feet (883 m). The park also features a pond that is stocked annually, and an Olympic size pool with a modern bathhouse, and concession stands that serves the area from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
The park is named after Dans Mountain, which was is in turn named after Daniel Cresap, one of the first settlers in Allegany County. Daniel was known for being adventurous, often hunting with a Delaware Indian named Nemacolin. While pursuing a bear in a tree, Daniel fell and lay unconscious until Nemacolin found him, and dragged Daniel home to safety. Since that event, the mountain has been known as Dan's Mountain.
