On March 2, 2002, Carlton signed a professional contract with Morecambe after coming up through their youth academy. He made his Shrimps debut that same day, playing a part in a 2-0 win over Scarborough. He scored his first goal for the club one month later, on April 3, 2002, when Morecambe lost to Telford United 4-1.

Carlton, who made 199 appearances (74 as sub) for Morecambe, scoring 62 goals in all competitions, was signed by Carlisle United from Morecambe on 8 June, 2007.[2] He made his Cumbrians and Football League debut on August 11, 2007 playing a part in a 1-1 draw over Walsall.
