In the September 19, 1978 Danish electoral age referendum, the electoral age was lowered from 20 to 18 years. The referendum was a consequence of the Danish government lowering the age of majority from 20 to 18 in 1976, and public opinion was that the two ages ought to be the same.[1] 34.2 % of those eligible to vote voted in favour of lowering the electoral age, whereas 29.0 % voted against.[1] Voter turnout was 86.2 %, of which 55.0 % voted in favour.[1] The electoral age had previously been lowered from 21 to 20 in a 1971 referendum, after a 1969 referendum had rejected lowering the electoral age to 18.
