Daniele Postpischl (march 27th, 1944 - june 6th, 1992) was an italian geophysicist who contributed greatly to seismology research, his catalogues of italian earthquakes and other historic seismology collections, are the base reference for current earthquakes databases.
His approach strived to merge the technical and theoretical skills of scientific research with the passion for explorations; bringing together such diverse activities as scuba-diving, speleology, photography, para-gliding as valuable means to obtain a detailed description of natural phenomena and geological structures.

[edit] Biography

Daniele Postpischl was born in Bologna, Italy on March 27, 1944, and died there on June 6, 1992.
The family of his mother Eneide was originary of the Ossola valley in Northern Italy, while his father Umberto, an orthopaedic surgeon and methodist protestant pastor, had a mixed italian-swiss background, and also carried the surname of ancient czechoslovak origin.
Daniele was the second son of the couple, after Marta died at age 2 in 1943. They later have two other sons: Marco and Mirella.

[edit] Education

Attended high school at Liceo Righi in Bologna in the early sixties, then enrolled in the Physics BA at the University of Bologna, obtaining his cum-laude Laurea degree in the 1969-1970 academic year, with a dissertation thesis entitled "Superficial waves in stratified and dissipative media" under the supervision of geodesy professor Michele Caputo.
He completed his formation with a 3 years post-graduate scholarship at the geophysics institute of the same institution, financed by CNR (National Research Center) (may 1971 - may 1974).

In june 1974 Postpischl won a public selection for a position of assistant professor at the Geophysics Institute in Bologna, and was then started his professional career with the geodesy research group.

From the academic year 1976 he was also responsible for the exercitations of the Experimental Physics undergraduate course, and collaborated on a textbook on measurement theory and statistical methods for students, which became the standard textbook on those subjects for a decade.

In January 1978 he was assigned to the seismology research group.

Between 1977 and 1982 he was also nominated coordinator for the 'Italian Earthquake Catalogue' working-group on behalf of CNR's Geodynamics Project.

During these years he was also very active in early scientific computing programming, taking advantage of the Cineca consortium facilities.

In april 1979 he obtained a new assignement at the Topography, Geodesy, and Minerary Geophsics institute of the Engineering faculty of the Bologna University, there he started his main research activities in applied geophysics and held the Minerary Geophysics class, later in 1982 he was nominated Associated Professor at the same Institute, and also became part of the scientific committee of the National Group for Earthquake Awareness (Scientific Research Ministry).
Between 1983 and 1986 he coordinated the historic seismic research activities promoted by ENEL to establish the seismic risks of the sites chosen for the national nuclear plant network, managing a research group that reached 100 people.
