Daniel Román Peralta is an Argentine Justicialist Party politician, current governor of Santa Cruz Province since 2007.
Peralta was secretary general of the Banking Association of Santa Cruz in the 1980s and 1990s, when he became a deputy in the regional congress for the Peronists. Under governor Ricardo Del Val, Peralta held various ministerial posts in the Province. [1]
Peralta took on the governorship of Santa Cruz at a troubled time for the Province, amid strikes, riots and allegations of police brutality. Peralta was managing the oil company Yacimientos Carboníferos Fiscales in the oil-rich province, for which he had taken a leave of absence from the regional congress. He took on that role at the request of President of Argentina Néstor Kirchner following a mine accident which killed 14. [2] Peralta had served Kirchner as sub secretary of Labour when Kirchner was himself Governor of Santa Cruz in the 1990s.
Upon incumbent governor Carlos Sancho's announcing his resignation citing poor health (who had himself taken on the role when the previous governor resigned following scandals and fights with Kirchner), Peralta returned to his role of deputy and was elected 1st Vice President of the House of Deputies, effectively the most senior deputy. This allowed him to be named acting governor upon Sancho's withdrawal on 11 May 2007. [3]
In the general elections in October 2007, Peralta was officially elected as Governor, beating Radical Eduardo Costa by almost 20 points as part of the Front for Victory slate. [4] He was sworn into office in December 2007.
