From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Daniel "Danny The Lion" Leo (b. 1941), who was once a member of the East Harlem Purple Gang sometime during the 1970s, is now the alleged boss of the Genovese Crime Family. He is the uncle of Genovese crime family mobster Joseph Leo and relative of Gambino crime family capo Arthur (Chink) Leo who served as a capo in the 1950's and 1960's. His relative Arthur Leo became notorious for being one of the many former associates of Joe Valachi who were convicted for crimes after Valachi became a turncoat in 1959. He was a suspected illegal drugs trafficker during his earlier years. After living a very low-profile life in New Jersey, he was indicted on federal loansharking and extortion charges in early 2007. In early 2008, Leo pleaded guilty to racketeering and will serve a 5 year prison sentence. As of April 2008, Leo is still residing in the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York. His projected release date is October 7, 2011.
