[edit] Background

After graduating from West Point Academy in his youth, Hale served in the Gulf war alongside his friend Paul Kellerman (played by Paul Adelstein), whom he had met during their training together. After the war, Kellerman became a hardened Secret Service agent working for Caroline Reynolds, at the time a member of the Illinois School Board, while Hale joined the F.B.I.'s Counterterrorism Unit and settled into a calm family life. After Hale resigned from the bureau about a decade later, Kellerman recruited him to work for Reynolds, who was now the Vice President of the United States. He and Kellerman soon became deeply entangled in the conspiracy that framed Lincoln Burrows (played by Dominic Purcell) for murder. Officially, he is no longer listed as a member of the Secret Service or even as an employee of the Federal Government. At 22, he married his wife Allison, who he had two children with.

[edit] Appearances

The character of Daniel Hale was first introduced in the show's pilot episode as Kellerman's nervous partner. A relatively minor character, he nevertheless appeared in almost all of the first 13 episodes of the first season.

[edit] Season 1

Hale agreed to participate in the plot to frame an innocent man for murder, convincing himself that he was acting in the best interest of the country. He grew increasingly disillusioned when several innocent people were being killed to cover up the plot and the Vice President ordered the two agents to kill anyone that got in the way. This culminated in the murder of Lisa and Adrian Rix, two people killed only because of their connection to Burrows. When Hale expressed doubt to Kellerman over how far things had gone Kellerman warned Hale not to question the conspiracy, threatening Hale's life if he did not obey. He came to realize that Kellerman was not the friend he once knew; he had radicalized and now frightened Hale. Hale soon has a crisis of conscience and calls Veronica Donovan, offering to reveal the entire conspiracy. But Kellerman discovers his deception; he is later shot and killed by Kellerman when Kellerman finds out that he is named by Hale in a three-page document about the conspiracy, which was about to be given to Veronica.

Hale's last appearance was in the episode Brother's Keeper, a flashback episode to three years earlier when Lincoln Burrows was first framed.

[edit] Season 2

Hale is mentioned in season 2 when Kellerman, working undercover posing as a homosexual drug addict named Lance to gain the trust of Sara Tancredi in order to use her to find Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows, names his fake gay boyfriend "Daniel" after his fallen friend.
