Daniel Cross (born March 30, 1983) is an Australian rules football midfielder who currently plays for the Western Bulldogs.

Cross was picked up with pick 56 in the 2000 National Draft and made his debut two years later in Round 10, 2002 against Richmond. In 2004 he was nominated as a National Rising Star as well as being voted best team person within his own football club. He had an outstanding 2005 season, playing every game and averaging 26 possessions a game. This effort earned him second place in the club best-and-fairest count behind his role model Scott West.

In Round 21, 2006, Cross amassed a career-best 36 possessions as the Bulldogs lost to St. Kilda. At the 2006 Brownlow Medal Count he polled best on ground (3 votes) twice.

Cross started the 2007 AFL season in fine form, possibly finally shaking off his "apprentice" tag in relation to his matchday "handballing" role as a protege to the Western Bulldogs superstar Scott West, before suffering a severe knee injury during the Round 11 clash with the Brisbane Lions.

Cross' 2008 campaign began strongly, playing a key part in the Bulldog's undefeated first 8 rounds of the season.

[edit] Victoria Harbour incident

On 4th October 2007, Cross and fellow teammate Tom Williams leaped into the water of Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong to rescue a schoolgirl attempting to commit suicide. Despite the girl not wanting to be saved, they hauled her to safety after hearing bystanders screaming for help. When they emerged from the harbour they both had minor bruises and cuts. Both were reported to be in good spirits after the incident.[1][2]

Following the incident, both Cross and Williams were awarded certificates of commendation by Hong Kong's Director of Marine[3].
