[edit] Career
[edit] In France
Cousin (pronounced Coo-sahn) previously played for RC Lens, a club to which he moved from Le Mans Union Club 72 in the summer of 2004. He has played international matches for the Gabon national football team, he has also played in the lower leagues in France for Martigues and Niort.
[edit] Rangers
On August 9, 2007, Cousin arrived at Murray Park in Glasgow to hold contract talks over a move; it was later confirmed that he had signed a three-year deal for a reported fee of £750,000.[1]
He scored his first goal for Rangers on his debut in a 2-0 home league win against St. Mirren on August 11, 2007,[2] and scored twice on his first start a week later against Falkirk.[3]
Cousin scored on his return to France, against Lyon in the UEFA Champions League on the 2 October 2007. Rangers beat Lyon 3-0, Cousin scoring the second goal of the game, on his Champions League debut for the Glasgow side.[4]
In November 2007 Cousin was linked with a transfer away from Rangers, and it was reported that he had a release clause in his current contract which means he could leave in January 2008. This was denied by Rangers but it was admitted he has a release clause of three million pounds during the 2008 summer transfer window.[5]
Cousin intensified this speculation when he sparked an attack on his Rangers team mates over their drinking and dietary habits ahead of a crucial game with Olympique Lyonnais.[6] This was dismissed by Cousin, who said he had been misquoted.[7]
On 21 January 2008 it was reported that FA Premier League side Fulham had had a £2 million bid rejected by Rangers but manager Walter Smith did admit a deal might still be done if the bid was increased.[8] A fee was agreed the next day after a bid of £3 million activated a release clause which was in Cousins contract.[9]
However, the deal was held up due to FIFA regulations which stipulate that a player can only appear for two clubs in one season. Since Cousin also played for former club RC Lens that season before joining Rangers he required special dispensation from FIFA to complete the move.[10] On January 29, the transfer was cancelled as FIFA did not grant permission, leaving Cousin to stay with Rangers until at least the end of the season.[11] It emerged that the deal could still proceed after FIFA said that no decision on the matter had been reached.[12] But, on 29 February, it was announced that FIFA would not allow the deal to be completed.[13]
