[edit] Plot

Shelley Sheridan (Alyssa Milano) is Hoover High's most popular student who's about to go to the school prom with her boyfriend Kevin McCrea (Brian Bloom). When they break up right before prom, they're forced to find a new date in a limited time. Everyone is assuming Shelly will find a new boyfriend in no time. Shelley is scared when she can't find one. She lies to her friends that she's going to a frat party. She visits the town cinema to watch an old horror movie to avoid the crowd. Here, she runs into the school geek Dan Lefcourt (Chris Young). Dan is avoiding his father (Alan Thicke), who thinks Dan has a good social status in high school. While first using him so she won't run into her friends, Shelley soon discovers Dan is a really nice guy.

Jock Kevin has a bet with his friends that he will bring the unpopular Angela Strull (Tracey Gold) to prom. While Angela is delighted with having Kevin as her date, her friend Margaret (Tempestt Bledsoe) doesn't trust it at all. Kevin does not only have to convince Margaret he is serious, he discovers that Angela's overprotecting father (Kelsey Grammer) is not easy to deal with. He eventually chases the two "lovebirds" all night.

Meanwhile, the beautiful but obnoxious Patrice Johnson (Christina Applegate) is so sure she'll be named prom queen, she's arranged for an all-night celebration with her boyfriend Roger (Matthew Perry), whom she is having on a string. Her only competition is Shelley. And she isn't there!
