Danbury High School is a public high school in Danbury, Connecticut.
Despite Danbury's rather large population of approximately 90,000 people, there is only one public high school, along with several small private schools and one vocational high school. Compared to other school systems in the Fairfield county area, Danbury has a much more diverse population and student enrollment. The student body varies dramatically not only racially, but economically, and historically, as a relatively large population of the school is made up of immigrants. The school recently underwent an accreditation review by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. DHS takes pride in its diversity and large population, but an often criticized aspect of the school is its rather large size in the over 40 year old building, leading to moderate over-crowding. DHS is currently at 107% percent capacity for the building.
[edit] Athletics
Danbury High School carries a strong athletic tradition. They are perennial powers in wrestling, boys and girls track and field, and boys cross country. The wrestling, cross country, and track teams have all numerous state titles and New England championships. All three programs are considered to be nationally ranked annually. The 2007 Danbury cross-country team was ranked #1 nationally in the preseason poll and finished 5th at Nike Team Nationals. The wrestling team has won FCIAC titles 20 years in a row and haven't lost a home match in 10 years. The boys track team has won more meets over the past decade than any other school in the FCIAC. They have several All-Americans on the team every year. They went on a seven year winning streak, not losing a single dual meet, but were successfully defeated by the Trumbull High School boys track team 77-73. The football team has been a consistent let down over the years, never living up to expectations. Basketball is a growing favorite in Danbury High. The student fan section named the "Hatter's Hooters" has recently been voted the #1 high-school cheering section in Connecticut.
