Dana Murzyn (born December 9, 1966 in Calgary, Alberta) is a retired professional ice hockey player.

[edit] Playing career

Murzyn entered the NHL as the 5th overall pick in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft to the Hartford Whalers. He had a stellar rookie season and was named to the 1986 NHL All-Rookie Team. After two and a half seasons in Hartford, he was dealt to his hometown Calgary Flames midway through the 1987–88 season. The following season represented the highlight of his career, as he was a key component of Calgary's defense as they won the Stanley Cup in 1989.

Murzyn was dealt to the Vancouver Canucks at the trade deadline in 1991, where he would ultimately spend the majority of his career. He quickly became a key contributor on an up-and-coming Vancouver squad, and formed an enduring partnership on the team's blueline with Jyrki Lumme which lasted most of the 1990s. He was a member of the Canuck team which reached the 1994 Stanley Cup finals, but was injured in the opening round and replaced by Brian Glynn. In the late 1990s, a string of knee injuries eroded his mobility and he retired in 1999 at the age of only 32.

Murzyn was a steady defensive defender who was noted for his strength in dealing with opposing forwards in front of the net and in the corners. He was also noted for his lack of footspeed which often drew the ire of Canuck fans, especially late in his career. However, he was a steady influence who gave 100% and always stuck up for his teammates.

He finished his 14-year NHL career with 52 goals and 205 points in 838 career games, along with 1571 penalty minutes.
