[edit] As a surname
Dana as a surname may have several origins. In England, it came from dann, the valley of a meadow, and it may mean the dweller of that valley. In Continental Europe, it probably came from Dane (or Danish, from Denmark). This surname is related to Danese in Italy and it can be found mostly in the Piedmont region. It may also be a modification of Huguenot French origin, probably a variant of d'Aunay, of geographical origin. It may be also a Gaelic patronymic, since it is a common forename in Ireland. Dana is a relatively common surname in the USA, ranking 7161 out of 88,799 in the 1990 U.S. Census.
At least into the first half of the 19th century, all American Danas were descended from Richard Dana, who arrived in Cambridge, Massachusetts around 1640.

As a forename, it is used for males as well as for females. It may come from Dane (from Denmark). As a male forename it is well known in the USA, being in the 314th rank out of 1219 in the 1990 U.S. Census. In Denmark, Dan (without an A; literally meaning "Of Denmark") is a quite common name, where it is exclusively masculine. "Dana" or "Danah", in Arabic, means "the most perfectly sized, big, round, and beautiful pearl". This name is used mainly by Arabs of the Persian Gulf, due to their traditional pearl diving professions wherein they gave different type of pearls names. It is used in the Arab world as a female name. The name is used in Persian for both male and female sexes. While the word literally means 'knowledgable', some speculate that the name is first used as a first name in Shahnameh.
