[edit] Background

Commissioner Dan Saltzman is a Portland native who attended schools in the Portland area and on the east coast before entering a career in environmental engineering. Dan’s political career has included a staff position with US Senator Ron Wyden, five years as a Multnomah County Commissioner (1993-1998), and his current third term as a City of Portland Commissioner.

[edit] Issues

Dan was first elected to Portland’s City Council nearly nine years ago. Since then, Dan's issue profile has included: the safety and education of Portland’s children, the sustainable development of Portland’s economy, and the dedication to high standards and efficiency in government. Dan has established two bureaus during his service with the City of Portland: the Office of Sustainable Development (OSD) in 2000 and the Children’s Investment Fund (CHIF) in 2002. OSD is responsible for the initiation of Portland's green building program, (G/Rated), which requires all City facility retrofits and all City-funded or -financed projects to be built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards. Additionally, OSD has promoted initiatives in renewable energy, sustainable food practices, and recycling.

Since 2002, CHIF has provided over $10 million each year for five years to aid Portland’s at-risk children. CHIF funds support programs that seek to prepare children for school, offer constructive after-school activities, and protect children from abuse, neglect, and family violence. Funding primarily goes toward resources for education, health, and safety.

[edit] Bureaus

Dan currently oversees four City of Portland bureaus as assigned to him by Portland’s Mayor Tom Potter: the Office of Cable and Franchise Management, Portland Parks and Recreation, the Office of Sustainable Development, and the Children’s Investment Fund.
