Dan Owens (born March 16, 1967 in Whittier, CA) is a retired National Football League defensive lineman.
[edit] Professional career
Owens played for the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons between 1990 and 1999 and amassed 33 career sacks. In his last season with the Lions, he started at defensive tackle. He was a solid starter, even though he probably didn't even weigh 290 pounds. When he got hurt in week 9, (lost for the season) there was a dramatic drop-off in play at that position, as "young bull" Darius Holland had very poor recognition skills. (If Owens had Hollands physical attributes, he would have made the pro-bowl almost every season - his recognition skills were among the best.) The whole defense fell apart, as there was a huge hole in the middle. The next season the Lions brought in much better back ups, in case of any further injuries to starters. Unfortunately for Owens, his injury at his age ended his career.
[edit] College career
Owens played college football at the University of Southern California where he was All-Pac 10 in 1989.
