[edit] Playing career
Typically playing as a defenceman, Hamhuis was drafted as the 12th overall pick in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators as a highly touted prospect. The Predators re-signed him on a one-year contract on August 16, 2005. Hamhuis was named in the Canadian squad for the 2006 World Championships in Riga, Latvia.
He has been given the nickname "Hammer" by Predators fans, due to his frequent use of hip checks that knock opposing players to the ground.[citation needed]
The Nashville Predators and Dan Hamhuis agreed to a four-year, $8-million contract on September 21, 2006.
He was a member of the 2007 Canadian IIHF World Championship team that won gold in a 4–2 win against Finland in Moscow.
