Daniel Q. Auerbach (b. May 14, 1979) is the guitarist and vocalist for the Black Keys, a blues/rock group from Akron, Ohio. He is also a cousin of the late Robert Quine. Formerly of the 3 piece band "The Barnburners" from Akron from 2000 until 2002. Auerbach became infatuated with blues music during his childhood after being exposed to old records by his father chuck chuck.[1] In a technique similar to many earlier blues players, Auerbach often uses an index finger fingerpick along with his thumb to play chords.

[edit] Influences

He was influenced early-on by his mother's side of the family, notably his uncle who played bluegrass music. He was heavily influenced by Junior Kimbrough in college, eventually resulting in him dropping out to pursue the guitar more seriously. "I've listened to him so much, it's just how I hear it... I studied him so much... Getting F's in college, when I should've been studying, I was listening to Junior Kimbrough's music instead".[2]

Major influences include: Junior Kimbrough, Robert Johnson, Robert Nighthawk, T-Model Ford, Hound Dog Taylor, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Kokomo Arnold

[edit] Equipment

Dan claims to prefer vacuum-tube amplifiers over solid-state.[3]

  • Fender Jerry Donahue Telecaster w/ DiMarzio twin-blade humbuckers & .011, .015, .020, .030, .039, .049 (bought individually, not as a set) strings
  • Ampeg B12XT 2x12 combo amp
  • Fuzz pedal(s): EarthQuaker Devices Hoof Fuzz, Russian Big Muff, Analogman Fuzz, Maestro Fuzz-tone, etc
  • Also Silvertone (as seen in the video for just got to be) and Teisco Del Ray guitars (as seen in the video for 10 a.m. automatic)
  • On the Magic Potion tour, he uses a white 70s Ibanez lawsuit SG with maestro tremolo. although the guitar has three pickups, only two are active. the middle one was hollowed out by the previous owner[4]
  • Dan has also recently been using a Silvertone 1454, and also a Harmony H78, both rare three pick-up models from the late 60's
  • Dan frequently uses a Gibson Firebird VII for recent live shows

[edit] Engineering & Producing

In recent years, Auerbach has set up his own recording studio in Akron called Akron Analog where he has engineered and produced recordings from Radio Moscow (Ames, IA), Brimstone Howl (Lincoln, NE), Patrick Sweany (Massillon, OH), as well as the forthcoming "with blasphemy so heartfelt" album by Dan's 18 year old protege Jessica Lea Mayfield (Kent, OH).
