Damnonii

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Damnonii (sometimes spelt with the variant Damnii) were a Brythonic tribe and early inhabitants of the British Isles. They occupied what is now Glasgow and Strathclyde in west central Scotland, whose territory included the modern district of Dumbarton and who had a major stronghold at Dumbarton Castle. Along with their Votadini neighbours to the east, they formed a buffer state between Roman Britain and the Picts who were the least controlled of the tribes the Romans sometimes grouped as the Caledonians. In the aftermath of the Roman withdrawal they formed the Kingdom of Strathclyde.
