[edit] Early life
Dale Chung-Te Chen is the youngest son of Kenneth and Shelley Chen, first generation immigrants from Taiwan. His father is an electrical engineer at Sandia National Laboratories with a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. His mother is a registered nurse working at the Sequoyah Adolescent Treatment Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His older brother Neal is an orthopedic surgeon residing in Boston, Massachusetts.
Chen attended La Cueva High School in Albuquerque and graduated in May 1995. Subsequently, he attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, California earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.
[edit] Career
[edit] Homestead
After graduating from Stanford University, Chen began his career at the Internet startup Homestead Technologies as a Software Developer. With the mission to innovate web applications to allow non-programmers to create web pages, Chen programmed portions of the WYSIWYG web page editor, SiteBuilder. Initially released as a free service, Homestead's business model was to sell sponsored advertisements on users' webpages. Chen developed an extensible framework to quickly and easily add new advertisements. Later, Chen implemented an affiliate marketing system to allow users to place specific advertisements for various e-commerce websites on their pages to earn commissions. Struggling to generate enough revenue to be sustainable, Homestead got caught up in the irrational exuberance of the time and announced layoffs in 2001.
[edit] PeopleSoft
Following his experience at Homestead, Chen sought out a more established company to learn how to build a profitable company. He joined Peoplesoft in 2001 as a Software Engineer in the Enterprise Performance Management product suite. In addition to leveraging his technical skills, Chen was able to build some basic accounting and business skills while working on PeopleSoft's Global Consolidations product. Built using a Data Warehousing architecture, the Global Consolidations product aggregated financial data from disparate accounting systems for businesses with highly complex business unit organizations. The product automated the calculation of complicated accounting rules and provided advanced reporting tools, giving organizations more visibility into the performance of the overall enterprise. As the youngest member of the team, Chen became an integral part of the development team. Working directly with customers and product managers, Chen designed prototypes, documented functional and technical specifications, and developed the application. Some of the product's early customers included Citigroup, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and TXU Energy.
After working on the Global Consoldations product, Chen transitioned to the Planning and Budgeting product to get further experience in business processes. Chen was selected as part of an all-star team to rearchitect the existing Budgeting product using a new multidimensional Analytic Calculation Engine. Chen took ownership of the most integral piece of the product, implementing and integrating a multidimensional calculation model to allow greater insight into an organization's future budget and forecast.
During this time, Oracle launched a hostile takeover of PeopleSoft starting in 2003. After the uncertainty created by Larry Ellison's assertion to eliminate most PeopleSoft positions, Chen decided to leave PeopleSoft to go to Enterprise Software rival SAP.
[edit] SAP
After leaving PeopleSoft, Chen stayed in the Enterprise Software market joining SAP in April 2005. With his prior experience in Data Warehousing and reporting tools at PeopleSoft, he worked on several innovative projects including the xRPM (Resource and Portfolio Management) product and an early prototype of a product to facilitate the SAP Business Warehouse implementations.
Although he enjoyed his work at SAP, he still envisioned himself starting his own company. Longing for a fast-paced startup environment, he left SAP in November 2005.
[edit] ProTrade
With his passion for sports and technology, ProTrade was the perfect combination for Chen. Along with a team of MIT statisticians and programmers, Chen came to the internet startup in November 2005 to create software to revolutionize the sports industry. By analyzing statistical information in the National Football League, National Basketball Association , and Major League Baseball, the company created a predictive market to determine the true on-field performance of an athlete using a Moneyball style valuation method. Users are able to build a portfolio of athletes to earn as ProTrade currency and win prizes.
Chen developed many portions of the product, including live play-by-play statistical analysis, trading of athlete securities, and user portfolio management. He has also been instrumental in the companies efforts to build an advertising revenue stream.
[edit] Personal life
Chen was married in March 2005 in Dana Point, California to Grace Chen whom he met while living in the dormitories at Stanford. The couple does not have any children, but plan on starting a family in the near future. They currently reside in Oakland, California.
[edit] Hobbies
In his spare time, Chen enjoys spending time outdoors and appreciating nature. He recently became interested in photography and enjoys taking photos of landscapes, architecture, and people. His photos can be viewed on his Flickr gallery (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mookie_dc/).
With a appreciation of people and diverse cultures, he and his wife love travelling around the world and meeting people from other countries. His most recent trips were to the Palawan, Philippines, Hong Kong, China, and Rio de Janiero, Brazil. One of his goals is to combine his work and his love of travel by working overseas in Asia or Europe. The countries he would most like to visit next are Thailand, Maldives, Peru, and South Africa.
