Talk:Dalmatian (disambiguation)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Figured the dog would be far the most looked up thing for 'Dalmation' and edited article accordingly. Mercury1 04:24, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

The result of the discussion was no consensus. Dalmatian (disambiguation)Dalmatian — Dalmatian refers to anything from Dalmatia. The dog just happens to be one of them. Let us not put it over higher importance. —Parable1991 (talk) 03:14, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

  • Support - as nominator Parable1991 (talk) 03:15, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Dalmatian can refer to many different things, but in English language texts when used alone (i.e. without a following noun) refers more often to the dog breed and the current page setup reflects that. The disambiguation notice at the top of Dalmatian covers for the alternative meeting adequately. Knepflerle (talk) 09:16, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Oppose per Knepflerle. Everyone from Dalmatia stands in the shadow of the spotted dog which has achieved a greater notability in English. Woof, woof. Llamasharmafarmerdrama (talk) 22:37, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Oppose. The dog breed is the most well-known use of the term. PC78 (talk) 00:49, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Support - I'm sure some dog enthusiasts might think the same way about Chihuahua. Dumrovii (talk) 02:10, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
    • The cases are a little different. Here we have Dalmatian used overwhelmingly for the dog (when used without a following noun), and Dalmatia used only for the land. With Chihuahua the same spelling is used for both city and dog and the need for disambiguation is higher; I think the current arrangement of the Chihuahua pages is both correct and consistent with the proposed setup for these pages. Knepflerle (talk) 09:46, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
    • Dalmatian is also a demonym and a language. Some dogs enthusiasts still may argue that Chihuahua is better known as a dog and just as they would for Dalmatian as opposed to the demonym or the language. Dumrovii (talk) 04:46, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Support per Alsatian and Labrador. I think Dalmatian is less known than these geographically named breeds, and its celebrity is greater thanks to Disney films, but I still have doubts about how primary is its use. I think the safe thing is to not presume what readers are searching for. Cross porpoises (talk) 19:18, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
