The politics of Dalit Nationalism has been brought into full play only in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, where the Bahujan Samaj Party, representing the Dalit community, has consistently polled 20 percent of the vote in the elections in the last two decades, and even shared power with one of its rival the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a Hindutva party. It currently rules the state alone.
