Dales is an unincorporated town with a population of 300, located 14 miles east of Red Bluff, California. It shares a PO Box ZIP Code (96075) and wired telephone prefix (530-597-xxxx) with the town of Paynes Creek, about 9 miles to the east. It shares a ZIP Code for street addresses with Red Bluff (96080).

In the state legislature Dales is located in the 4th Senate District, represented by Republican Sam Aanestad, and in the 2nd Assembly District, represented by Republican Doug LaMalfa. Federally, Dales is located in California's 2nd congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +13^[1] and is represented by Republican Wally Herger.
