Daisy Zamora

Daisy Zamora (20 June 1950 in Managua, Nicaragua) is a Nicaraguan, her family was wealthy, liberal and politically active. She attended convent schools and studied at the Universidad Centroamericana, located in Nicaragua. She earned a degree in psychology. She has a post graduate diploma from INCAE. She has also studied at the Academia Dante Alighieri and the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. While attending school she became politically active. She is a well known contemporary Central American poet. She has published three books of poetry, En limpio se escribe la vida, La violenta espuma, and A cada quien la vida, and an anthology, called The Nicaraguan Woman in Poetry. She is known as a political poet, writing about revolution and feminist issues, but she also writes about art, history, culture and daily life. As well as being known for her poetry she is a painter and a psychologist. She was involved in the fight against the Somoza dictatorship in the 1970s. She joined the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) in 1973. In 1979 she was the program director as well as the voice of Radio Sandino’s clandestine programs. During the revolution she was exiled to Honduras, Panama, and Costa Rica. After the revolution she became the Vice Minister of Culture. She worked closely with Ernesto Cardenal, Minister of Culture. She currently resides in the United States.
