Donna Jo Margaret "D.J." Tanner (born February 9, 1977) is a character in the television sitcom Full House, portrayed by Candace Cameron-Bure.

[edit] Biography

D.J. Tanner was the oldest sister in the Tanner family. She was the daughter of Pamela and Danny Tanner; her younger sisters were Stephanie Tanner and Michelle Tanner. D.J.'s parents' last date was the prom (Danny's Very First Date), which is usually in May. They eloped right after that (Luck Be a Lady, Part 2). Since her birthday is in February (13 Candles), she was likely conceived right after they eloped.

D.J. handles many tough situations with general ease. Though she gets upset at times over her father prying into her affairs or otherwise embarrassing her, she is always quick to apologize when she has acted rudely. D.J. gets very mad about the limits her father places on her; however, and in many episodes, she ignores these limits. Nonetheless, she does eventually learn her lesson, albeit the hard way. This structure of one of the "Tanner sisters" learning a life-important lesson is shown in many episodes. From the sixth episode (Daddy’s Home), when she wouldn’t talk about how much she wished Danny wasn’t working so much because Stephanie would cry about Danny missing her recital, D.J. shows great sensitivity toward her younger siblings. She also stays home from her first non-mother/daughter slumber party to take care of Michelle when Jesse, Joey, and Stephanie all have chicken pox, so Michelle won’t get it - even though Danny was perfectly willing to miss a chance to sit courtside at a Golden State Warriors basketball game. Stephanie got on her nerves quite often with her snooping, and this trend continued throughout the series.

Her interests include music, movies, friends, and karate (early in the series).

[edit] Relationships

  • Her first and main steady boyfriend was Steve Hale (seen as Steve Peters in his first appearance, Sisters in Crime). In a later episode, D.J. went to Spain for six weeks. When she gets off the plane, she introduces her new boyfriend Steve, portrayed by Scott Weinger to the others (Come Fly With Me). In the mid-season seven episode Love on the Rocks, Steve and D.J. break up, due to their having grown apart. Steve is seen in the last episode of Full House as D.J.'s prom date, leading to speculation that they had gotten back together.
  • D.J.'s best friend is Kimmy Gibbler. In the first episode of Full House (Our Very First Show), D.J. is seen talking on the phone with Kimmy. Kimmy and D.J. have occasional fights in the show, but rarely anything major. In the last episode of Full House (Michelle Rides Again Part 2), Kimmy arranges for D.J. and Steve to go to the prom together.
  • D.J. is competitive with Kathy Santoni. In one episode, Kathy has the flu and is unable to fulfill the role of Juliet in the school play Romeo and Juliet. D.J. takes the role of Juliet. In another episode, her boyfriend Michael broke up with her because he wanted to date Kathy.
  • D.J. had a recurring boyfriend in season 8. His name was Nelson, and he was very wealthy. D.J. breaks up with him when Nelson and D.J.'s ex-boyfriend Viper fight over her in the episode D.J.'s Choice.

[edit] Notes

  • Of the six original characters (Danny, Jesse, Joey, D.J., Stephanie, and Michelle), D.J. is the only character to not appear in every episode; she was not in the season 6 episode Subterranean Graduation Blues. In the episode, Steve tells the family that D.J. is "away on a ski trip" as an explanation for her absence.
  • The family thinks D.J. is eloping one day so they go to see her and tell her not to get married but it turns out that the one who was getting married was Kimmy Gibbler.
