Cyprus Turkish Airlines Limited (Turkish: Kıbrıs Türk Hava Yolları Ltd. Şti. (KTHY)) is a Cypriot airline that refers to itself as the 'national airline' of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and is based in northern part of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. It operates scheduled services from Nicosia to several airports in Turkey and the UK (via Turkey), as well as charters to destinations in Europe, mainly United Kingdom, via Turkey. Its main base is Ercan International Airport.[1]

Although it is de jure registered as a Turkish airline in Istanbul, in practice day to day operations are run from Nicosia, Northern Cyprus. All services to Europe are operated via Turkey due to the Cyprus-Conflict.

The airline was established in December 1974 and started operations in February 1975. It is also known as Cyprus Turkish Airlines. In 2005 the Turkish government sold its shareholding in the airline to the Turkish Cypriots so most of the shares are all on the Turkish community (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus).

  • 1974-KTHY was established on December 4th 1974 in Nicosia as a Limited Company. Shares were equally divided between THY and the Cash Development of the Consolidated Fund of the Assembly of the Turkish Cypriot Community.
  • 1975-First scheduled flight realized on Feb. 3rd, 1975.
  • 1976-Aircraft of types DC-9, Boeing-727-200 and Boeing-720 were rented then joined the fleet.
  • 1976-Sales office opened in Kyrenia.
  • 1977-KTHY is registered as a Turkish company in Istanbul, Turkey [2]
  • 1981-Scheduled London flights commenced.
  • 1990-2 Boeing-727-200 purchased.
  • 1991-Ground operations staff and cockpit / cabin crew employed.
  • 1992-KTHY introduced its own premises for catering.
  • 1993-Third Boeing-727-200 purchased.
  • 1995-First Airbus-310-200 purchased.
  • 1996-Fourth Boeing-727-200 purchased.
  • 1999-Second Airbus-310-200 purchased.
  • 2000-2 Boeing 737-800 were long term leased.
  • 2001-Third Boeing 737-800 was long term leased.
  • 2002-4 Boeing-727-200, upon completion of technical flight-hours, grounded and sold.
  • 2004-3 Airbus 321-200 were long terms leased.[3]
  • 2004-Caretta flight magazine re-introduced.
  • 2005-KTHY shares, all passed on to the Turkish Community from Turkey on 9th of september.
  • 2006-ISO 9001-2000 Quality Control System certificate obtained in April.
  • 2006-Scheduled flights to Gaziantep commenced, first one being on 18th of June.
  • 2006-Scheduled flights to Trabzon commenced, first one being on 2nd of September.
  • 2006-DCS system introduced and used for the first time in Ercan Airport in September.
  • 2006-Ground services in airports of Turkey passed on to "HAVAŞ" in December.
  • 2007-"Cyprus Airport Services" was formed after KTHY's partnership with "HAVAŞ".
  • 2007-Scheduled flights to Birmingham commenced, first one being on 21st of May.
  • 2008-Fourth Boeing 737-800 purchased, to be delivered on February 2009.
  • 2008- Fourth Boeing 737-800 ordered, to be delivered in February 2009.

In December 2006, the airline made a formal application to the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority for a licence to operate direct non-stop flights between UK airports, and Ercan International Airport (ECN) in Northern Cyprus. The application was turned down in February 2007. [5]

In April 2008, the airline has signed a bussiness contract with a travel agency in Germany called 'Oger Turk Tur'. The point of this contract was to be able to bring much more tourists to Northern Cyprus (T.R.N.C.) because Germany is one of several countries in the world that sends the most tourists around the world.

According to this contract, KTHY(Cyprus Turkish Airlines) will fly to 8 new destinations via Germany and an aircraft will be rented accordingly to do 14 flights a week between Turkey & Germany. KTHY(Cyprus Turkish Airlines) have also confirmed that they will also fly to Cologne & Stuttgart in Germany, (which is not part of the 8 new destinations). [6]

KTHY has ordered a Boeing 737-800, which is to be delivered in February 2009 to the airline.
