Cypriot birthday legends

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In southern Cyprus (close to Larnaca) lived a poor man named Paulieos. As a child his parents Luverleio and Presctinca could not afford to keep him, as they couldn't even afford food for themselves and left him to an orphanage (which he never attended due to over populated numbers.

As he grew older and wiser he negan to realise that he didn't have what many other people had. He also noticed how he was treated differently because of his finacial status. Paulieos worked long and hard hours for little money but was pleased he was on his way to making a happy life for himself. Even though people could see how hard he was working, they never gave him the light of day because of his parent's "misfortunes".

Paulieos began to get used to his life and never thought his luck would change. However one day, He was walking in a feild collecting off cut grass to burn in a fire to keep himself warm wh ame across an old farmer struggling to get a goat in through the gate to his back feild.

Paulieos always believed that he had to help the needy as one day he would be rewarded. Paulieos asked the old farmer if he needed a friendly hand with the goat. The farmer thouhthing of Paulieos and continued to struggle with the goat by himself.

Paulioes, feeling un-wanted decided to keep looking for off cut grass. As he walked down the path he heard the farmer yelling for him to come back. Although Paulieos didn't want to go back he decided that it would show the farmer that he cared. As Paulieos walked back his eyes set upon a large snake in an up-right position waiting to strike the farmer. In a way Paulieos saw the snake as his harsh life, waiting to prey upon him. So without warning, he gabbed the farmers mre shovel and beat the snake to death. The farmer was enternally greatful and rewarded Paulieos with the goat. As he gave Paulieos the goat he said; "Do not eat this goat, for aslong as you have him... good luck and fortune you will receive".

Paulieos took the goat and thanked the farmer for his kindness. Over the space of 12 years, good fortune followed Paulieos. He became very wealthy, he married a lovely woman and had many children.

On his first sons 10th birthday he gave him the goat as a birthday present. Rumour has it, the goat is still alive to this day and is being passed down in Paulieos's now decendants family.
