Cypress Hills College is a community college based out of Swift Current, Saskatchewan that provides post-secondary education in the south west region of the province. A new institution called Great Plains College was announced on July 1st, 2008. The name Great Plains College reflects both the geography and the aspirations of the region given the booming economy of the area. The slogan of the new college is “Education with Energy” to reflect not only the spirit of the new institution but also a renewed focus on the opportunities in the energy sector.

The college provides certificate and diploma programs in a variety of fields and trades. A limited number of university courses are offered at the Collage in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina.

The main campus of Cypress Hills College is located in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, with rural campuses in Gravelbourg, Maple Creek and Shaunavon.

Great Plains College will have nine campuses at: Swift Current, Saskatchewan, [Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan|Gravelbourg]], Maple Creek; Shaunavon; Biggar; Kindersley; Outlook; Rosetown; Warman. [1]

Cypress Hills College and Prairie West College announced March 4th, 2008 that the two institutions have agreed to merge to form a new institution called Great Plains College on July 1st, 2008. [2] The goal of the merger is to enhance and expand the programs and services for students who attend campuses in communities across western Saskatchewan from Warman to Maple Creek. The merger will result in no job losses or campus closures. Current programming is not impacted by the merger, which still requires approval from the Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour. [3]

“Regional colleges provide education and skills training that meets the needs of the communities and employers it serves. We were both looking for ways to expand to take advantage of the booming economy. We realized we could do more together,” said Mark Frison, Cypress Hills College President. “We have partnered together in past in the energy sector and we intend to do more in that area. There is a demand out there that we can meet. We are merging to grow,” said Bruce Probert, Prairie West College CEO. [4]

Regional college students are able to receive, in their region, post-secondary education and skills training which is responsive to local employer needs. Cypress Hills College offers a variety of programs such as Univeristy, Applied Arts & Technology, Trades and Safety Training. <[5]>
