Cypraea leviathan is a common cowry that inhabits rocky intertidal areas and caves at depths up to 8m. Three varieties are known:
- C. leviathan leviathan (leviathan cowry). Endemic to Hawaii.
- C. leviathan bouteti (Boutet's leviathan cowry). Found throughout Polynesia.
- C. leviathan titan (titanic cowry). Found throughout the Indian and central Pacific Oceans.
