Cynthia Martells was a pre-law student at Rutgers University, before her mother encouraged her to become an actress. She then entered the Rutgers' Mason Gross School of the Arts (where she was taught by, among others, Avery Brooks). She has worked on Broadway, off Broadway, in television and film.
