[edit] Actions of Blotto adrift
Please look into the actions of Blotto adrift. He keeps changing the Trenton Ontario page to relfect his own edits. He has edited the page one one day more than 7 times. Now the page has been locked with his incorrect edits showing. Please ask Blotto adrift to understand that this is not the purpose of wikipedia and please correct the page. Thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.189.25.208 (talk) 15:22, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Protection of Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/IRC/Proposed decision
On 17 January, following a series of edits to Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/IRC/Proposed decision, User:FloNight protected the page and added the following in an edit summary: "I protected the page from all editing until the case is closed or edits all agree to make all productive comments about the proposed ruling and not other editors". Flonight has not left any further messages as yet, so I am posting this message to all those who edited the page in this period, and asking them to consider signing this section at Flonight's talk page indicating that they will abide by this request. Hopefully this will help move the situation forward, and enable the talk page to be unprotected (with any necessary warnings added) so that any editor (including those uninvolved in this) can comment on the proposed decision. Thank you. Carcharoth (talk) 05:42, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

for discussion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at[edit] AfD nomination of Taco Liberty Bell
An editor has nominated Taco Liberty Bell, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Taco Liberty Bell and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 15:16, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] John Kerr
I don't know how you edit a title, but could you please change the title of 'Olav Kerr, Lord Kerr of Kinlochard' to John Olav Kerr, Lord Kerr of Kinlochard? A google search will show he is known as John Kerr or Lord Kerr, never by his middle name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 10-styb (talk • contribs) 12:10, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Cydebot edit comments
Hi Cyde. Would it be possible to have the bot's edit comments link directly to CFD and similar discussions? It's always nicer when a bot's "reason for botting" is fully documented, in my experience. --SB_Johnny | talk 02:07, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
As far as I can see, the links are already there; what more would you like? Please be specific, with diff links of edit summaries you think are lacking and which links you would add to them. --Cyde Weys 03:28, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well, it's actually this diff that got me thinking (or more accurately the one after that one). The edit comment just says WP:CFD, but of course that was a while ago so whatever the conversation was (which I figured out after noticing it was just removing a definite article) wasn't on the CFD page anymore. It's just good to have a link to a conversation to see why whatever the bot is doing was done. --SB_Johnny | talk 05:12, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- Speedy renames don't have full discussions to link to. As a consequence, they must adhere to a pretty strict set of criteria on when they can be done (for instance, conforming capitalization to the MoS, expanding acronyms, correcting misspellings, etc.). Read WP:CFD for more details on the process. --Cyde Weys 14:45, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Cydebot leaving CFD categories
Cydebot left two CFD categories on several new category pages when implementing CFR renames per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2008 January 29#Category:Côte d'Ivoire people. Is this a Cydebot error, of just a fault in the parameters that someone gave it? I've fixed the affected pages now but you can see them in my contribution history, 23:37 to 23:47 on 5 February 2008. - Fayenatic (talk) 23:54, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- I was about to say the same thing. It looks like Cydebot, when making edits to categories that are marked for deletion, renaming, whatever, is moving the cfd categories outside of the CFD template (for example, Category A is set for renaming to Category B. Category C is in Cateogry A, but Category C needs a rename to Category D. When the bot moves Category C from A to B, it moves Category:Categories for renaming (or deletion, or merging) and Category:CfD 2008-01 below the "END CFD TEMPLATE" marker. So when the bot goes to move Category C to Category D, it adds Category:Categories for renaming and Category:CfD 2008-01 to Category D instead of removing them. (See the deleted edits here for a clearer example). --Kbdank71 18:10, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
I've made a change to the bot that should fix this. If any errors remain, of course, please do let me know. --Cyde Weys 00:45, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Problem with CFD from Jan 27?
I was wondering if there was a problem with the CFD from Jan 27th (Category:Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees as a Performer to Category:Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees)? Cydebot seems to be skipping it. --Kbdank71 16:10, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Cydebot request
Hi, I've been pointed to User:Cydebot for help with tagging a big number of user subcategories, all of which I'm inclined to nominate for discussion. There's no hurry, but I'd appreciate information on if this is possible/a good idea in general, how it would work and what I would have to do. Thanks in advance, User:Dorftrottel 18:19, February 11, 2008
[edit] Tagging problem
Cydebot keeps changing the tag on Image:Flag of Thunder Bay.svg from {{tl:insignia}} to {{tl:Non-free logo}}. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be doing that. vıdıoman 08:34, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Cydebot and 'clever' template categories
Hello I noticed your bot had done this this . There was some wikicode trickery going on to only categorize the page into Category:Main pages with misplaced talk page templates if the template was used in the main space, your bot moved the categories out of the wikicode to the base of the article, which broke the trickery. I think I have corrected it for one article , see here
Unfortunately this has meant quite a few articles are now in Category:Main pages with misplaced talk page templates which should not be. GameKeeper (talk) 20:38, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
I don't see what there is to do to fix this at this point. Templates with complicated syntax in them should not be substituted. --Cyde Weys 01:40, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Speedy deletion of Template:User userfy
A tag has been placed on Template:User userfy requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.
If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

[edit] my apologies
It seems that I've been entirely wrong-headed and that it seems that in removing the recent templates from your page that I was stopping Raphael1 welcoming you to the community, in his own words "That you don't want me to welcome other editors to Wikipedia or commend them to Wikipedia:Introduction does not give you the right to blank my posts from their talk pages.".
My deepest apologies, let me just say that if after six years (where has the time gone) and tens of thousands of edits, that if you haven't made it to the Wikipedia:Introduction, you really should, it's most interesting. Would you like a proper welcome template or do you think you could struggle on without one? --Fredrick day (talk) 00:07, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Dear Cyde...A year and a half ago, if I remember correctly, I told you that I could create a userbox that would replace a slew of them. Would you be willing to move 20 user templates back to template space in exchange for the ability to delete 750+ user templates and a user template category? - LA @ 14:11, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Cyde, Cydebot re-implemented [1] an old CFD decision that was later overturned at DRV. Is it possible to automatically reverse the category de-population so I don't have to do it by hand? Thanks either way.--chaser - t 18:51, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
If you can get me a list of what should be in the category then I can have Cydebot add the category to each one rather than having to do it manually. To make the list, I would suggest you work off of Cydebot's contribs list from the original depopulation. --Cyde Weys 03:26, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Five "Date of birth/death" categories and five "Place of birth/death" categories
In June 2007, following the consensus view that the ten Date/Place categories should be repurposed to the discussion page, Cydebot performed that praiseworthy task. In the intervening nine months, however, numerous well-intentioned, but misguided editors have continued to add these categories to the article page to the extent that in some instances, the misplaced entries have begun to outnumber the properly situated ones. I hope it would be possible for Cydebot to regularly (or, at least, hopefully, as frequently as schedule allows) sweep these malplaced categories from the article page to the talk/discussion page. The ten categories in question are:
- Category:Date of birth missing--------------------------------------Category:Place of birth missing
- Category:Date of birth missing (living people)------------------Category:Place of birth missing (living people)
- Category:Date of birth unknown-------------------------------------Category:Place of birth unknown
- Category:Date of death missing------------------------------------Category:Place of death missing
- Category:Date of death unknown-----------------------------------Category:Place of death unknown
Thank you for your valuable service and your million+ edits.—Roman Spinner (talk) 05:26, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
Hrmm, we're putting categories on talk pages now? Where exactly do the categories in a talk page go, at the bottom? I mean, this is possible, but I'm not really aware of categories being used on talk pages like this. Templates yes, but not categories. --Cyde Weys 14:35, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
- Nearly a year ago, in late April 2007, following complaints by a few editors that the maintenance categories (which denote the absence of years, dates and places of birth and death) were creating visual clutter among the "standard" categories at the bottom of biographical article pages, two CfDs dealing with a number of the maintenance categories, arrived at a consensus. The above ten categories (dates and places are considered to contain needed, but non-essential, or "defining" data) were repurposed to the discussion pages, where a small group of specialized editors, with a penchant for research, could continue to complete the missing information. Only the absence of the years of birth and death (five "Year categories"—Category:Year of birth missing, etc.) was noted as "defining", thus entitling those "Year categories" to remain on article pages. The wholesale transfer of the ten non-defining categories was completed by COBot on June 13, 2007 (example: COBot's final transferred entry on June 13, Talk:Zoran Vraneš, can be seen in that talk page's revision history). To keep all of the categories together, the agreed-upon place for the newly-transferred categories was to be directly below the Wikitags/templated categories and, if present, DEFAULTSORT (seen as a more-precise sorting feature than "listas="). In the event a recent or newly-created biographical article does not yet have a discussion page, Cydebot would create the pertinent discussion page and place the transferred category or categories at the top of the page. Tens of thousands of these non-templated maintenance categories have already been placed on discussion pages (and continue to be placed manually) but, unfortunately, a number of well-meaning, persistent editors continue to add them to article pages. Hopefully, Cydebot would be able to help maintain the equilibrium as schedule permits.—Roman Spinner (talk) 02:43, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Magic
My intention was to make Category:Magic (paranormal) and Category:Magic (illusion) subcats of Category:Magic when I tried to place the request at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2008 March 22.
I thought my request was unsuccessful, so I went ahead and performed the changes manually. Now I see that my request was indeed successful but the bot keeps emptying Category:Magic and making Category:Magic (illusion) a subcat of Category:Magic (paranormal) and Category:Magic (paranormal) a subcat of itself.
When I try to undo the errors, the bot reverts my edits. If possible, please alow the corrections to stand.

[edit] Question re. CSD list
There's an AN thread going, regarding the way people are transcluding User:Cyde/List of candidates for speedy deletion, making it tough to go through Whatlinkshere when deciding whether to delete. Is it possible to change these to external links without removing any functionality from the page? Ral315 (talk) 13:19, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
Why the hell are people transcluding that list?! That seems like the obvious problem to fix. --Cyde Weys 00:57, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Please consider joining the working group for the WMF DC Chapter
Please consider joining the working group for the WMF DC chapter. Since we have a very active and very community oriented DC/MD/VA area group of Wikipedians, it only makes sense to develop it as a chapter, especially given the recent changes to the Board of Trustees structure, giving chapters more of a vote. Hopefully we will be either the first or the second officially recognized US Chapter (WMF Pennsylvania is pending as well), and hopefully our efforts will benefit WMF Penn as well. Remember, it's a working group, and this is a wiki, so feel free to offer changes, make bold changes to the group, and discuss on the talk page! Yeah, I'm not wasting my time on this anymore. This has already come up on three separate occasions with the same resolution each time: Cydebot's deletions are completely uncontroversial and are saving lots of unnecessary human gruntwork. --Cyde Weys 02:34, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for the response and I do see that you have disclosed on your bot page for quite a long time that you will use your admin login to do certain tasks. I'm not really here to argue about bad bots or bad admins. I do have a little quibble when you say you won't waste your time on this anymore, that kind of leaves out us little guys who are trying to understand and don't have the benefit of calling to hand all the history at the drop of a hat. I would just urge you to be as open as possible with your automated ops on your admin account, log them as they happen, indicate in your edit summaries that it's the bot doing it, leave the maximum possible trail to what's going on. There's really no problem with doing automated edits iff they are on a solid basis and can be scrutinized by everyone, just like every one of our manual edits can be. There is an extra concern when your eyeball might not be on each one of those edits, I've seen a few times now when tools run awry. Anyway, put it all out in the open, let it stand or fall on its merits, leave a trail for future generations. Cheers! Franamax (talk) 05:01, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- It is all out in the open. It has been for over a year. All of the bet deletions are clearly marked as such. I just don't know what more you're expecting. Just because you weren't aware of it previously doesn't mean there's anything wrong. The "no admin bot" maxim that people have been repeating through rumors hasn't been true for years. It's just that there's no formal approval process, so each bot is handled individually by the community. There have been some admin bots that were found wanting and that were ceased. No one has ever proposed a serious problem with my admin bot. --Cyde Weys 15:33, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- And agghh, I spent an hour formulating the post above, save it, check my watchlist and the entry immediately above my change to your page is this. Also a discussion I just saw somewhere about VoAbot flagging addition of plurals to an article as vandalism, though I can't locate that just now, so that may be frivolous. Point here though is, botops are a matter of concern, they are occupying a lot of the community's time, and a defensive "we've already been through this" attitude is not necessarily productive. It really would be good if the bot community could get together and mount some coherent explanations, FAQ's, outreach, to communicate why bots are beneficial, and what avenues individuals have to figure out WTF is going on. /semi-rant. Franamax (talk) 05:25, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- I don't see how that other case is relevant. That bot blocked; mine is only deleting category pages. It's not like a bot either does no admin actions or it does all of them. It can only do what it's been programmed to do (barring SkyNet). I can assure you, my bot has not been programmed to do blocks, and if you distrust me on that, you can scour my block log to verify for yourself. --Cyde Weys 15:33, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Bot comment
Hi Cyde. I'm sorry to bother you, but your bot has caused me a little consternation because of an image of mine that it's flagged for deletion. The image in question is up for deletion because it has been copied over to the Wikimedia Commons.
Now, that's not really a bad thing in of itself, but the user who moved it there (Sswelm) hasn't done a particularly good job, such that (a) it's not obvious that I created the image (which could cause trouble down the line if someone wants to query/attribute the image), and (b) the wikilinks that I used in my description of the image simply don't work in the Commons. Since my Wikipedia image is bot-tagged for deletion, information not present in the Commons version will be lost (in that special Wikipedia sense of "lost"). Now, I could tidy up the Commons version, but I don't have an account there, and I don't want to have to do this every time one of my images is (badly; and without informing me) moved there.
Anyway, I'm not writing to ask for a solution, but just to point out that your bot might inadvertently be removing attribution and other information by preferentially deleting Wikipedia images over their (ostensible) clones in the Commons. If Commons users do their jobs properly this shouldn't happen, but that's not guaranteed (i.e. this isn't your bot's fault at all). Finally, as an aside, while your bot flagged my image for deletion on the image's discussion page, it didn't leave a message on my talkpage, which seems remiss. - Can you elaborate? I can't figure out what's supposed to be the problem here. All I see my bot doing is renaming a template to avoid a redirect; nothing more. It doesn't flag images for deletion, nor does it actually delete any. As for removing attribution from images, I don't understand what you're talking about; Cydebot doesn't do that either. Could you be real specific with diff links, please? --Cyde Weys 23:40, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

- Sorry Cyde Weys, my bad. A warning flag appeared on the image above and I mistakenly attributed it to the edit that your bot made (apart from me, the only other editor was the bot). I now realise that the warning flag had nothing whatsoever to do with your bot, and instead seems to be automatically added to an image whenever it also appears on the Commons. Duh. Please accept my apologies. Best regards, --Plumbago (talk) 13:31, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
- No problem. --Cyde Weys 00:12, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Terraxos (talk) 00:56, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[edit] FIU Golden Panthers
The category should be called FIU Golden Panthers, just like USC Trojans. It is far more common to call them the FIU Golden Panthers, including the official site at fiusports.com. This move is idiotic.►Chris NelsonHolla! 00:08, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Congratulations, you failed to report your concerns to the correct person, and then sealed your fate in not getting any further help by using anti-social language. Tell me, if someone was complaining about one of your actions to you and they characterized your action as idiotic, would that make you feel more likely or less likely to help them? --Cyde Weys 03:06, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Comment on CfD
I see that you recently had Cydebot move articles out of a bunch of categories that were renamed pursuant to Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2008_May_16#African-American_categories. However, you did not check the destination categories. At least three of these destinations already existed -- Category:African American actors, Category:African American history, and Category:African American singers, but they contained {{category redirect}} templates pointing them to the same title with a hyphen. You didn't remove these now-invalid redirects, so when RussBot did its regular weekly run today, it duly started emptying out these categories and moving all the contents back to the old, deleted titles. I suggest that, before carrying out a category rename, you check the rename destination and make sure that it has the appropriate content. --Russ (talk) 10:15, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Image attribution error during transwiki
Hi, Cyde. Concerning your message on my talk page regarding commons:Image:Canal 035.jpg, attribution information is copied automatically by BetacommandBot from file history which listed Mintguy as original uploader. It seems that there is a missing file upload entry which caused that error. As I can see you have already corrected attribution info on Commons, so I guess that this settles this issue. Cheers! --Meno25 (talk) 16:19, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
