The paragraph about backward compatibility only being solved by JIT isn't true. Backward compatibility was solved by having dependency information placed into the instruction stream (by the compiler). In that way, wider machines that issue multiple long instruction words in parallel can be built with full backward compatibility. That's how Itanium and the TI DSP solutions do it.
