Cyberclash

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cyberclash was a science fiction first person shooting game from Crystal Dynamics for the 3DO platform that was never completed for release in 1993. The premise of the game was that you play a cyberpunk hacker that must go up against other cybernetic opponents in a cybernetic online world. The only evidence that truly exists that this game was planned to come out for the 3DO was a small video and synopsis that was released as part of a Sample This! interactive sampler disc for the 3D0. The 30 second video shows a EKG style green line pulsating on a grid and then pans to a computer screen that shows a simulated head with the words establish optical link flashing on the screen. It then shows a robotic device penetrating into the simulated head's eye socket. A seated person is shown from behind in a cluttered room. They are being given a blood transfusion while a robotic arm equipped with a fiber optic needle device swings toward the player. There is a close up of the person's eye, we can see clamps are holding it open and the eye though human looks yellowed and kind of sickly. We then move back to the behind the chair shot and we see the robot slowly move the needle forward suggesting it injected into the subjects eye and then a swirl of colors and lines like we are moving down a tunnel and into the cyberworld. We then emerge into the cyberworld with floating platforms and strange objects in a blue summer sky. The video then ends. There is also a small synopsis in the sampler's booklet:

[edit] Legacy

Whether the game would have been a critical success is not certain. The glut of first person shooter games on the market in 1993 was big and the 3DO was loosing sway in the new video game wars of the 90's. The style of gameplay as well as the premise suggests that it was based on concepts of Virtual Reality and the cyberpunk movement of the time. These motifs while intriguing were often not realistic and were often nothing more than window dressing on a subject that had more serious connotations and ambitions.
