From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The relationship between statistics education and statistics is the same as the relationship between mathematics education and mathematics. Statistics education refers both to the processes involved in teaching and learning statistics, and to a field of scholarly research on teaching and learning statistics. The term "statistics education" is used interchangeably with "statistical education", as in the name of the international umbrella organisation for the field, the International Association for Statistical Education, and is not to be confused with education statistics which is statistics about education, or "educational statistics" which tends to refer to the statistical methods used in education. Statistical literacy is a statistics education subfield of growing importance. Researchers in statistics education are concerned with the processes involved in the teaching and learning of statistical concepts and skills, the areas of need for these skills and concepts, and means for improving teaching and learning in the discipline. Although a younger field than mathematics education research, statistics education research is also developing into a fully fledged field of study, with its own characteristic concepts, theories, methods, organizations, conferences and literature. This article describes some of the history of the area and the main organisations involved.

[edit] History

Significant milestones in the history of statistics education are: the founding by the American Statistical Association (ASA) of a Section on Training of Statisticians in 1944 (renamed the Section on Statistical Education in 1974)[1]; the setting up by the International Statistical Institute (ISI) of an Education Committee in 1948, the founding in 1978 of the journal Teaching Statistics by the Royal Statistical Society and the U.K.'s Institute of Statisticians; the ISI's initiation in 1982 of the 4-yearly conference series, the International Conference on the Teaching of Statistics (ICOTS); the development out of the ISI's Education Committee of the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE)in 1993; the foundation in 1993 of the Journal of Statistics Education (JSE) (now an ASA journal); and the initiation in 2002 by IASE and ISI of the Statistics Education Research Journal (SERJ). The early years are described by Vere-Jones in his 1993 article, The Coming of Age of Statistical Education [2]. Other key historical references are Gani (1979)[3], Holmes' 2003 account of the history of statistics teaching in English schools[4], the 1982 book Teaching Statistics in Schools Throughout the World[5] which is a report by the ISI Taskforce on Teaching Statistics at School Level on the state of statistics teaching internationally at that time, the 1987 companion volume The Training of Statisticians Round the World[6] the 1987 bibliography by Misra et al. [7] and the 1996 bibliography by Sahai et al. [8].
