[edit] Synopsis

[edit] Series 1:

Its main character was Alison (Allie) Henshall (played by Sarah Parish). In the first series she and her husband Gavin Ferraday (played by Jason Merrells) own a hair salon together. A rival salon is opened by the wife (played by Amanda Holden) of Allie's former lover (played by Ben Daniels), Finn. Finn and Allie reignite their affair, and after rediscovering their grown-up daughter, Ruby, whom they gave up for adoption almost two decades earlier, decide to stay together, resulting in Allie leaving Gavin.

[edit] Series 2:

In the second series, Gavin and Ruby have a passionate relationship, which results in her getting pregnant. Allie also gets pregnant, but only by having an affair with Gavin, Finn is not the father, and Finn knows it, as he secretly had a vasectomy. Series 2 ends with Gavin having to stay with Ruby, and Allie having to stay with Finn.

[edit] Series 3:

The third series saw the departure of Amanda Holden's character, Mia. Allie and Ruby both give birth, Allie has a boy while Ruby has a girl. The series ends with Ruby deciding to leave Gavin, and Allie and Gavin re-igniting their relationship once more. Finn leaves at the end of the series.

[edit] Series 4:

Series 4 starts with Allie learning she has ovarian cancer. She goes into chemotherapy. Allie and Gavin remarry each other, and just after she heard that she was to be cured of her cancer, Allie is hit by a bus and dies midway through the series. Gavin finds it hard to cope with her death, and at the end of the series has rekindled his love affair with an Australian woman, Melissa (played by Christine Stephen-Daly), whom he met between series 1 and 2. However, Melissa decides to stay with everyone at the salon, and Gavin leaves with his and Allie's son.

The plans for a 5th series were shelved after the show lost its popularity when Allie died and Cutting It was axed by the BBC.

[edit] German re-make

A re-make of the series called Bis in die Spitzen (de) was broadcast by Sat. 1 in Germany in 2005 - 2006. The re-make was set in Berlin and ran for 13 episodes (which included the story-lines of the original seasons one and two). Despite critical acclaim, viewing figures were lower than expected and so was axed by the channel after just one series. A four-disc DVD box-set was released on 24 March 2006.
