Cutervo National Park was established September 8, 1961 by means of the Law N° 13964. It is the oldest Peruvian National Park . It was the first protected natural area created by the Peruvian Government. Its creator was Salomon Vilchez Murga (1907-1993)a recognized Biologist who was born in Cutervo. At the beginning it includes a total of 25 km². Actually the park has 82 km². It is located in the San Andrés de Cutervo District, Cutervo Province, Cajamarca. There are lots of caves in this park like San Andres Cave, where the guacharo lives - a bird in danger of extinction

The principal objective is the protection of the flora and fauna and as well as the conservation of the beautiful scenic locations of the cordillera de los Tarros.

[edit] Attractions

Its main attraction is the Cueva del Guácharo, a one-hour walk from the locality of San Andrés. Int the cave, there is a colony of guacharo, nocturnal birds that feed exclusively on fruit and nuts. There is also a stream which flows under this cave, containing a species of catfish (Astroblepus rosei).

The park contains endangered animals such as: jaguar, ocelot, spectacled bear, neotropical river otter, colocolo, mountain tapir, and the national bird called the Cock-of-the-Rock.
