By the mid-1580s, Smythe was back in the Queen's good graces. On 26 May 1585, the Queen ordered a grant of the royal manors of Eastenhanger (Ostenhanger) and Westenhanger in the county of Kent, "to Thomas Smythe, Esq., his heirs and assigns, with all and singular the rights and customs, mills, houses, workshops, and fisheries lately belonging to her Royal ancestors, Edward VI and Henry VIII, to hold by military service, at an annual fine of £3 8s. 6 1/2 d."[1]
...however other sources indicate that Smythe bought Ostenhanger from Sir Thomas Sackville and other properties from Leicester; these are probably indications that people were buying and selling leases but I need to research this more deeply.
