[edit] 2 teams down, 28 to go.

Just for reference, here's my general methodology.

  • Make an Excel spreadsheet, and put in columns on each side with a [[ and a ]] with a column for the names in between. Next to the [[, I put a column for a *. Copy and paste those rows until infinity. To the left of the column with the *, I use a concatenate formula to add the 4 columns to the right into one string.
  • Go to a team page, and copy the Rosters into Notepad
  • Copy Roster info into Excel, eventually I want to make a list of players by number. I paste the info into a column for name and for number, and I use macros that get rid of numbers and letters respectively. I then do a REPLACE function on the name column for 2 spaces, which lines it up.
  • Check the players that are not American(since they're the vast majority), put in their info into a Nationality column, and then copy and paste "United States" into the other cells. It seems the majority of players are from the US.
  • Sort by team and then nationality and insert all the people I have not yet inserted. I am taking teams by alphabetical order, by league. There will probably be a different spreadsheet for each league.

[edit] Third team added

(so far, Baltimore, Boston and the Yankees, Toronto and Tampa Bay next -- i'm going by division.) I'll assist on formatting later, luckily, I can skip the Canadian players, which have already been done apparently. Karmafist 15:18, 24 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Alphabetical order

When adding new players to the list, please make sure they the list is in alphabetical order. Currently, it's very hard to find anyone within the bigger countries' lists. --Idont Havaname 20:42, 24 July 2005 (UTC)

I'm thinking of making separate articles for the larger countries' lists, eventually it'll get tough anyway with the U.S Karmafist 01:15, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Slightly More Than Half of the American League Done

The entire American League East is in there now as well as the White Sox, Detroit and Cleveland is in there now in addition to the Canadians. Karmafist 03:43, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Two Divisions Complete and a Modified Methodology

The AL East and Central is complete, and i've added a few things to my methodology above.

  • A column with nothing but a space in it between the * and the [[ as well as in between the first names.
  • Previously, I just typed in the entire name, for those columns I used the Text to Columns option in the Data menu and used the space inbetween their first and last names as a delineator.
  • Then I sort by nationality and then by last name, and copy and paste the wikified cells into notepad and then into wikipedia.

Sooner or later, the accented characters will need to be added, my keyboard does not allow me to directly type ASCII characters using the ALT combinations for some reason. Karmafist 18:07, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
