Curuguaty (originally called San Isidro Labrador de Curuguaty) is a city in the Canindeyú Department of Paraguay, that was the 4th capital of Paraguay during the War against the Triple Alliance.

The meaning of the word “Curuguaty” is “place of the Curugua”, curugua being a plant very common in the area.

Canindeyú Department has richness in flora and is surrounded by the Mbaracayú Mountains, which has an average altitude of 400 meters above ocean level. It is possible in this place, to appreciate the biological diversity of the Atlantic Forest.

In summer, the temperature reaches 39°C and in winter drops to 0°C. The average is the entire department is 21°C. The precipitations are very frequent and abundant.

The city counts with a population of 65.310 habitants, 34.137 are men and 31.172 are women, according to the projections of the Statistics, Polls and Census General Direction.

Curuguaty was found on May 15th 1712 by Juan Gregorio de Bazán y Pedraza, with the name of “Villa de San Isidro Labrador de los Reyes Católicos de Curuguaty”, in the banks of the Curuguaty River.
In this city lived during the government of Dr. Francia, and for over 30 years, Gervasio Artigas. During the War against the Triple Alliance, the Marshall López declared Curuguaty as the 4th capital of Paraguay and the Vice-President Sánchez settled in the place. López settled his troops near Curuguaty, on the banks o the Tandey Stream, when he was going towards the Amambay Cordillera, where the last battled would be fought during the war.

A martyr of the Paraguayan Independence, Mauricio José Troche, is native of Curuguaty.

The population of Curuguaty dedicates mostly to the exploit of wood and yerba mate.

Some touristic places are:
- The Solar de Artigas, the house where lived Gerasio Artigas during the government of José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, with a park in his honor.
- In the proximities of the city are several communities of natives as the Mbya Guaraní and Ache Guayaki.
- In the Municipality, a Museum where are kept some old artifacts from the time of the war.
- There are also beautiful forests and swamps, besides the Curuguaty River, that form the rural landscape.
[edit] How to get to Curuguaty
Curuguaty is located 240 kilometers from Asunción; the way of access is through Route No. 3 “Gral. Elizardo Aquino” and through Route No. 10 “Las Residentas”, which communicates the departments’ capital with Asunción. Also, the superhighway of Itaipu, communicates the city with Alto Paraná and Presidente Franco.
Reaching the city, a not paved detour to the left leads to Villa Ygatimí, Ype Hú, Itanará and the Mbaracayú Forest National Reserve.
