[edit] History
The funds to build the school were approved in a 2005 bond election. To coincide with its opening in August 2007, a district-wide grade realignment plan that converted the two existing junior highs into middle schools and the two intermediate schools into the district's sixth and seventh elementary campuses.[2]
Over 25 suggestions for the new campus name were received from the community. The name Curtistene S. McCowan was selected and approved by the school board on January 22, 2007.[3][4]
McCowan, a retired Federal Trade Commissioner, became DeSoto ISD's first African-American school board trustee in 1990. She went on to serve two three-year terms, two of those as president.
She currently serves as a member of the DeSoto Economic Development Corporation, the DeSoto ISD Education, and is president of the Concerned DeSoto Citizens entity.
