Curtis Benton Welch (February 11, 1862 - August 29, 1896) born in East Liverpool, Ohio was an outfielder for the Toledo Blue Stockings (1884), St. Louis Browns (1885-87), Philadelphia Athletics (1888-90), Baltimore Orioles (1890-92), Cincinnati Reds (1892) and Louisville Colonels (1893).

He helped the Browns win the 1885 and 1887 American Association Pennants and the 1886 Championship.

Welch led the American Association in Games (112) in 1885.

He led the AA in Doubles (39) in 1889.

Welch led the AA in being Hit By Pitch in 1888 (29), 1890 (34) and 1891 (36).

He ranks 49th on the MLB Career Stolen Bases List (453).

Welch also ranks 12th on the MLB Hit By Pitch List (173).

In 10 seasons he played in 1,107 Games and had 4,385 At Bats, 915 Runs, 1,152 Hits, 215 Doubles, 66 Triples, 16 Home Runs, 503 RBI, 453 Stolen Bases, 381 Walks, .263 Batting Average, .345 On-base percentage, .353 Slugging Percentage and 1,547 Total Bases.

According to Derek Zumsteg, author of The Cheater's Guide to Baseball, Welch hid cases of beer behind the billboards of Sportsman’s Park to consume during home games.[1]

Welch died in his hometown at the age of 34.
