[edit] History

Curious Pictures is the largest animation studio in New York and the home to award winning creators of animated TV series, commercials and celebrated characters in picture books. The company was founded in 1993 by partners Susan Holden, Steve Oakes, David Starr and Richard Winkler with a philosophy based on a tripod: “great work - make money - have fun.” Curious currently produces the top-rated pre-school series Little Einsteins for Playhouse Disney, and has produced such hit shows as Codename: Kids Next Door and Sheep in the Big City for Cartoon Network, A Little Curious for HBO and Avenue Amy for Oxygen TV. Most recently, the studio produced almost thirty minutes of innovative motion-capture animation for the documentary Chicago 10, which opened the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Among the many awards garnered by Curious Pictures’ directors are 18 Emmy Awards and two Caldecott Honors (presented to top illustrators of children’s books). Four of its TV spots are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

In 1994 the Curious team set up shop in their current studio on Lafayette Street in lower Manhattan's NoHo district. Gradually, five directors became a dozen and by 1995 Curious was producing upwards of 100 commercial projects annually. Today the 440 Lafayette building now boasts a 30,000 square foot studio containing cel and computer animation departments, a 7,500 square foot shooting stage with motion control camera systems, a motion capture system and digital editing rooms.

In 1997 Curious established its toy company, Curious Toys, with Bonz as its first line. Curious Toys began to expand with several additions to the Bonz line in 1998, all of which have earned awards of recognition within the toy industry. In 2000 Curious launched DCODE, a small hybrid production company/creative services company.

Leveraging its multiple strengths in animation, design, production and brand strategy, Curious has created successful branded entertainment for Mattel and AOL, as well as commercials for hundreds of global marketers. In 2007 Curious began representing French production company Mr. Hyde as part of their growing list of internationally recognized directors.
