From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Current heirs apparent are individuals who will inherit the throne of sovereign nations after the current sovereign dies or abdicates, and who cannot be displaced by the birth of another.
An individual who is next in line to the throne, but could be displaced by the birth of another individual, is a heir presumptive. For example, in some countries, the eldest female child of a sovereign who has only female children is the heiress presumptive; she could be displaced if a male child is born.
In other countries in which males and females are equal in the order of succession, an eldest daughter would be the heiress apparent. For example, in Sweden, the eldest child of the reigning king is a daughter, Crown Princess Victoria; since males and females are equal in the Swedish succession, she is heiress apparent even though she has a younger brother. Otherwise, her brother would be heir apparent, or if she had no brother, she would be heiress presumptive.
As individuals accede to the throne, they should be removed from this category.
