At some point this page will have to be broken up into multiple pages, but not yet. —Andrew Powell
It isn't anywhere near long enough to consider that now. NicM 18:20, 1 February 2006 (UTC).
I agree, not yet, but if we are going to have sections on "black horse troop" then it will only be a matter of time before we have one for Hockey, Infantry, Band, Polo etc. and then there could be confusing overlap. If we have a section on "Band" do we mean Winter School band or the Summer Camps Naval Band? —Andrew Powell 19:24, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
I think it is probably best to try to avoid too much uninteresting detail about the sports (a lot of schools have hockey teams, covering the key points can't require a full section of its own), but then I don't really know anything about the school. Maybe there is enough interesting stuff to say about each sport to justify each having its own subsection: if you can do it, knock yourself out.
IMO the article is a little unbalanced now anyway, there is very little text about the school itself and a lot of sometimes tedious detail about the camps. I think it needs four substantial sections on:
  • School history (foundation, change to allow girls (why, when, etc), must be a lot of other significant events in >100 years)
  • School organization (how the kids are split up, who owns and runs it now, funding etc)
  • Sports, clubs and awards (the horse and boat clubs, hockey teams, school band etc)
  • The summer camps (history, summary of options and organization, etc)
And a good lead-in, see WP:LEAD. Oh, and it needs sources :-). NicM 19:55, 2 February 2006 (UTC).
Again, I agree. It is always hard to see stuff get cut out but you do have a point.
  • I tried to add some sources to the page for the Lacrosse champ references but I must apologize about the formatting. I went from one wiki help page to another. If I see one then I think I can fix the others or at least do it better in the future.
  • I couldn't find the reference for 2002 but am working on it.
  • I like your section ideas. I agree that they should be added first :) —Andrew Powell 20:22, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Not all notable "former students" were students some were campers only. The school refers to all of these people as alumni. Is the term "Alumni" ambiguous somehow? —Andrew Powell 20:26, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
  • No, but it's better to use simple and common words where possible rather than less common. I wouldn't call someone who just attended a camp an alumnus anyway (alumnus just means "former student" in any case so if one is inaccurate, so is the other). Maybe "Former students and camp attendees" if you want to be strictly accurate. For source templates, see WP:CITET. Wikipedia has far too many help pages, you are often better just looking at how other articles (WP:FA is a good place to start for examples) do it. NicM 20:58, 2 February 2006 (UTC).
  • Thank you Nick. I have learned a lot from working this page powella 21:17, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Culver calls all these people alumni because up until the late 70's the summer program sported a pretty rigid 8-week curriculum and was referred to as a "summer school." students took classes in navigation, maritime law, and also some fun stuff too. In the late 70's i think enrollment started to be a problem so they started playing up the camp aspect and toning down the instructional elements.bflora 3-19-06

Merger Suggestion

For some reason a separate article has been created for "Culver Military Academy". This is really the same school. Now officially "The Culver Academies", I believe this article should live here. The old name is important to the school and its history and should be part of this article. Someone looking for "Culver Military Academy" may be interested in information that is here and may be looking for information about the summer camp or the girls program. And on top of that the article on the other page looks like an old version of this page or may have been copied from this page (or the other way around as the other article is actually older) So I am proposing the merger (from that page to this one) Andrew Powell 22:27, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
I think thats a good idea Andrew. -bflora
Done. The information was already duplicated so just needed to add a redirect to the other page. An admin would have to merge the histories, but I am not sure the benefit because the pages have led almost parallel lives. Andrew Powell 14:30, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
