Talk:Culture by region

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Like the list of national cultures article, this article aims to be a catalogue of cultures. However, this page has the following unique aims, not found in any other wiki article:

  1. Summarize cultures by regional variations. Thus, though Pakistan and India are two different countries, perhaps there are similarities between the language, the culture, the food, etc. These can be pointed out here.
  2. Because this is about regional variations, we won't look at something like goth culture among teenagers of the US. We are taking a broad perspective, and apologies to the smaller cultures out there--there probably won't be much space for more minor, smaller groups.
  3. Because this is about regional variations, links to more specific cultures (i.e. links to India and Pakistan and perhaps ethnic groups will be found within the South Asia section). This way, people will see relationships among cultures by location--what other cultures are nearby and similar, and what cultures, though maybe very dissimilar, it is coexisting with (perhaps unhappily).

One thing to note--I don't want to group regions together unless they really have cultural similarities or they interact so closely that they should be grouped together. That's why Mexico will be grouped with Latin America, and not North America, though there may be geographical regions for doing so. I understand this may not be perfect, with a growing Latin American influence in the US; however, as of now, it is still clear that the US and Canada form a much more close and natural grouping (with a common language) than by including Mexico... many US citizens speak Spanish, but it is still a long way from being a Lingua Franca or more than a common secondary language.--Culturesoftheworld 17:12, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

This article needs sources. If you're summarizing other Wikipedia articles, you should have {{main}} included somewhere; if not, we need citations. This sort of article will have serious tendencies to drift towards original research unless it is properly referenced. As I explained on your talk page, I think a bottom-up rather than a top-down approach to this article would work much better, but I'm willing to see how this works out. I would suggest that any unused headings be removed/commented out until they actually have some content. I'll take care of that. android79 18:04, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Chinese writing system

I've added the bit about the Chinese writing system, which I feel is critical for the definition of East Asia. I will add some relelvant sources soon(after next class in Chinese culture...). LaoAn 10:49, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure how detailed this article should be. For example, explaining about East Asian culture will probably involve a lot of the history of China, Korea, and Japan, and for that we can just put in links for those countries - is that the idea? LaoAn

[edit] Tagging

For regions with complex relationships, they can be listed under multiple regions. Singapore, for example, has deep Chinese roots but is located in Southeast Asia. It is better to recognize both influences, rather than attempt to pidgeon hole it into a single category that doesn't fit well.

[edit] Merge?

Please see Culture to discuss a possible merge. Maurreen 16:29, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Never mind, I just copied a portion of it. Maurreen 16:12, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
