Cullen F.C. are a Sunday welfare association football team based in Cullen, Scotland.[2] They play in the Moray District Welfare First Division,[3][4] where they finished tenth out of twelve in the 2007/08 season of the league.[5]
[edit] History
Cullen F.C. was founded in September 1890. They began their footballing play their games on what is now the 17th fairway of Cullen's Golf Course. Little further information is available regarding the early years of the club. More recently, in the 1930s, the club received a football kit from Celtic, and played in green and white.[6] They changed to their current kit colour of blue after a number of years.[7]
They moved from the golf course to Logie Park, and have played there ever since. Cullen F.C. celebrated their centenary in 1990 with a sportsman dinner held in Cullen's town hall. Many ex players, committee members and other guests attended the dinner. Guest speakers that night included Tommy Docherty, a former Scotland and Manchester United manager. This was a milestone in the history of the club.[6]
The club played in the Buckie and District Welfare League and had their most successful time in the 1980's, winning 3 league titles in a row and many cups, including the Tom Gordon Trophy.[8] They have played in the Moray District Welfare League since it was formed in 2001. After missing promotion in 2002 to a playoff, Cullen came back in 2003 by winning a treble, winning the league title, the first division cup, and the W.J. Tewnion Memorial Trophy.[6]
Their current kit sponsors are Kris Kros/Seafield Arms Hotel of Cullen, and local B&B and shop Puddleduck Patch.[7]
