Without looking up WP's naming criteria is "The Cuckoo Line" the correct title (as oppsoed to just "Cuckoo Line") ??? Pickle 19:29, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Cuckoo Line seems more common then The Cuckoo Line. Simply south 21:34, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Article Scope - Eridge to Polegate only?

While researching the route map for this article, it has become clear to me that the 'Cuckoo Line' name only applied between Polegate and Eridge. The section from Eridge to Tunbridge Wells West was actually built as part of the Three Bridges to Tunbridge Wells West Railway (see Subterranea Britannica article for TWW station). Therefore, it strikes me that this section of line should be removed from the article...when a new article for the correct line is created!

Or not! Closer inspection of the SubBrit page shows that through services were operated as soon as the Polegate-Eridge section was opened. I've revised the text to make the relationship between the two routes clearer. EdJogg 00:42, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Well i was at first confused, but if we're happy to cover it here then thats good. Obviously we need to do some work on the Spa valley railway article and perhaps the other closed Sussex lines (three bridges through east grinstead to Tunbridge wells west, bluebell line, wealden line, and a few other stubs, etc). The Cuckoo Line was the stretch from Redgate Mill Junction to Polegate, named after Heathfield's Cuckoo Fair. In the latter days, the service that operated it was from Tonbridge to Eastbourne via Heathfield. Mjroots (talk) 08:19, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Picture Request?

What sort of picture would be suitable for this article? All pictures I've found on the web appear to be copyrighted - I could go and take a picture of Hellingly Station (It's about 10 minutes walk from me) or the site of Hailsham station, but neither would really sum up the line to my mind. Thoughts? Muchclag 19:12, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Its a shame Hellingly Station is overgrown now. I could take photos from the Polegate end as I live in Polegate, but there are two new housing estates build on the line as well as a new bypass. --EddersGTI 14:40, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
Both sound like a good start, especially for the station articles. Generally for "line" photos (as opposed to stations) IMHO any pic of a train on the line somewhere is good, obviously with a closed line its more difficult. I'm no copyright expert but aren't old photos (like 70+ years old or something) out of copyright (if the photographer has died) - they might exist. Pickle 18:56, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
I have a book called "The Cuckoo Line" by A.C. Elliot, there are lots of old photos of the stations and on the line, not sure if its worth scanning them and putting them up? There is also a photo of the only accident on the line that happened too. --EddersGTI 22:43, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
I've tried to add in images of stations (or sites of demolished stations) where possible on this line - Horam and Heathfield - but don't yet have them all. Regarding questions of copyright, generally where the image pre-dates 1923 and the author is unknown, the file falls into the public domain at least under US law and can be tagged using this tag. Where copyright still exists in the photo, i.e. he/she died less than 70yrs ago, a reduced-size version can be used under the "fair use" tag - on condition that a free image is not available, e.g. in the case of a demolished station, it can be said that no free image is known to exist of the station. The accident photo would be interesting to have and given its date, it would almost definitely be in the public domain now. Ravenseft (talk) 21:33, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
